Colton Thomas scored a hat trick as the Cariboo Cougars rolled to their first home ice win of the BC  Major Midget Hockey League season on Saturday, defeating the Greater Vancouver Canadians 10-2 at Kin 1.

Colton Thomas (three goals, one assist) and linemates Chase Dubois (three assists), and Dorian Long (one goal, one assist) accounted for the bulk of the Cougars’ early offence.
Daine Dubois and Ethan O’Rourke each with a pair, Ty Kolle and Trey Thomas also scored for the Cougars. Alex Pescitelli and Scott Atkinson replied for the Canadians.
Dorrin Luding made 12 stops for the win. Mateo Paler Chow started for the Canadians, making 11 saves on 16 shots. Lukas Shaw came on in relief and stopped 14 shots.
The Cougars improve to 2-2-1 on the season, while the Canadians fall to 3-2.
The Canadians struck first, but the Cougars replied with six straight to take command of the game.
Pescitelli opened the scoring 2:04 into the first as the Canadians took advantage of a neutral zone turnover. Noah Kelly picked up the assist.
The Cougars responded quickly with Colton Thomas scoring his first at 3:36. After the Cougars won an offensive zone face-off, Long took the puck behind the net and found Thomas perched on the edge of the crease. The returning forward didn’t miss a beat, firing a quick shot passed Paler Chow.
Colton Thomas tallied his second of the period at 9:14. Christopher Jandric and Jesse Pomeroy started a breakout deep in Cougar territory and worked the puck up to Chase Dubois who hit a streaking Thomas in stride near the red line. Thomas tore down the right wing and fired a quick shot home.
Long gave the Cougars a two-goal lead late in the first. Stationed at the top of the blue paint, Long banged a Chase Dubois pass into the net at 18:57. Thomas got the other assist.
The Cougars kept on rolling in the middle stanza. Immediately After the Cougars survived a three-on-one rush by the Canadians, they got an odd-man rush of their own and came away with a goal. Joel Patsey and Reid Perepeluk set up Kolle at 10:39.
Less than two minutes later Colton Thomas and Chase Dubois connected for the prettiest goal of the night. Dubois did the hard work dipsy doodling through a pair of Canadians defenders before finding Thomas his quick shot found the top corner over Paler Chow.
O’Rourke also went top corner to make it 6-1 at 14:56. The big winger made one man miss at the Canadians’ blue line and rifled a shot over Shaw’s shoulder on the power play. Jandric got the assist.
The Canadians got one back late when Matheson Kroker sprung Atkinson coming out of the penalty box at 19:16.
Daine Dubois restored the five-goal lead at 3:39 of the third, taking some punishment in front of the Canadians’ net as he scored. Kolle and Perepeluk provided the assists.
Daine added his second on the power play at 13:25, finishing off a lengthy passing play with a goal. Tyler Ho and Kolle got the assists.
Trey Thomas made it 9-2 with another power-play goal at 15:06 set up by Riley Coish as the Cougars finished three for six on the power play. The Canadians were zero for eight.
O’Rourke’s second of the game in the final minute lifted the Cougars into double digits. Perepeluk recorded his third assist.
The two teams complete the weekend set bright and early on Sunday. Game time is 8:15 a.m at CN Centre.
