VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s cross-country team were victorious in their first cross-country meet of the season thanks to a first-place finish from fifth-year Vike Forrest Simpsonat the 41st Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore. on Oct. 3. The Vikes finished first overall with a team score of 34, while Simpson topped all individuals in the 8-km race in 24:17.6.


The Vikes had three racers finis in the Top-10 including Olivier Collin finishing sixth in 24:38.2, while rookie Shoayb Bascall placed 10th in 25:07.1. Vike Derrick Evans finished in 25:25.1 to finish 17th in the field of 200, while Ben weir was 21st in 25:29.7.

“This is really great for Forrest,” said Vikes head coach Brent Fougner on the fifth year who suffered a bike accident last season. “Forrest had to sit out last year because of injury and he has come back in great shape. We also had great efforts by Olivier and transfer Shoayb, Derrick and Ben to help the team win.”

Rookies Ian Searle crossed in 25:53.9, wihle Cooper Bentley finished in 25:57.6 and Alex Nemethy finished 26:16.2.

“Our top rookies were Ian, Cooper and Alex and their performance really shows that we have good things to look forward in the future of the program,” added Fougner.

The Vikes men will have a quick turnover as they will prepare to head to Bellingham, Wash. for the annual Western Washington Classic on Oct. 10.
