VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes Varsity Council is pleased to select their winners of the athletes and team of the month awards for the month of September 2015. The winners of this month’s awards are Vikes women’s soccer forward Emma Greig, men’s soccer midfielder Cam Hundal, and the Vikes women’s field hockey team.
Emma Greig, Women’s Soccer
FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Fifth-year forward Emma Greig has been honoured with this September’s Female Athlete of the Month award. The Tofino, B.C. native has been a rock for the Vikes women’s soccer side over the past four seasons, and continued that trend this year by adding three goals and four assists for the Vikes in their first seven games of the season. Greig is currently second in the Canada West in points and assists, and also fourth in total shots on target with 20. On a Sept. 26-27 road trip, Greig added a total of one goal and three assists in 3-0 and 5-1 wins against Thompson Rivers and UBC Okanagan, respectively. She was awarded Canada West Third Star of the Week honours for her efforts in the two wins, helping the Vikes stretch their win streak to four games and an overall record of 4-2-1 in September.
Cam Hundal, Men’s Soccer
MALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Fifth-year midfielder Cam Hundal has been awarded with the title of September’s Male Athlete of the Month. Originally from Terrace, B.C., the veteran midfielder has played a key role in starting the Vikes out to a 4-1-2 start on the season, good enough for first in the Canada West Pacific Division standings. With five goals and two assists in seven games, Hundal is tied for first in the Canada West for points and second in goals. The former 2011 CIS Championship MVP put on a show offensively on Sept. 26 against Thompson Rivers, scoring three goals, one assist and doing the work to force a WolfPack own goal in a Vikes 5-1 win. The hat-trick also helped Hundal earn Canada West First Star of the Week honours for the week of Sept. 25-27.
Women’s Field Hockey
TEAM OF THE MONTH
An opening weekend sweep of mainland rivals the UBC Thunderbirds helped the 2014-15 CIS bronze medal-winning Vikes women’s field hockey team start their season on the right note at 2-0. The Vikes shutout the T-Birds in both games 3-0 and 2-0, respectively. A goal in each game from fourth-year forward Amanda Kurianowicz helped earn the Calgary, AB native Canada West Third Star of the Week honours for the week of Sept. 18-20. The Vikes are also the hosts of this year’s CIS Championship for women’s field hockey Nov. 5-8.
