Season Opener: Camosun College Chargers host the Vancouver Island University Mariners

The Camosun College Chargers welcomed a full house of spectators to the Pacifiic Institute for Sport Excellence this evening as the Capital City squads kicked off the 2015-16 PACWEST season with a crowd thumping home opener against the VIU Mariners, topped with a banner raising ceremony for the 2014-15 Men’s squad who won the CCAA National Championships. 

WOMEN’S FINAL SCORE:

Camosun Chargers DEF VIU Mariners

CAM 3-0 VIU

(25-8, 27-25, 25-22)

The Chargers women’s volleyball team showed no mercy to their Island rivals and opened the season with a fast and furious 45-minute victory. The last time these two teams met, Camosun beat VIU at the 2014-15 Nationals to advance to the Bronze medal match which they eventually won. Fourth-year outside hitter Katie Fetting had 16 pts (4 aces, 9 kills, 3 blocks). Newcomer Michelle Zygmunt (third-year transfer from UFV) added 2 aces, 10 kills and 1 block.

Camosun Chargers (#2) DEF. VIU Mariners (#3) 15-8

(25-22, 30-28, 20-25, 25-22)

The boys did not disappoint tonight as both Island rival teams pumped out exhilarating performances. In the end, the Chargers prevailed taking the victory in 4. Two Chargers made impressive debuts. Haakon Ostrem (3rd year left side) notched 19 kills and 14 digs while teammate Jerome Cross (1st year outside) brought 13 kills and 9 digs.  

 

The Island Rivalry continues tomorrow in Nanaimo as the Chargers and Mariners face off at the VIU campus gym. Women 5pm; Men 7pm.
