Cougars rout Braves 8-3 for second straight win

SAANICH, B.C. – The Victoria Cougars earned their second straight win following an 8-3 rout of the Saanich Braves on Friday night.

Nathan Looysen and Nico Somerville scored twice for Victoria with singles coming from Dom Kolbeins, Kameron Fink, Ryan Vorster, and Cody Hodges.

Scoring all three goals for the Brandon Fushimi-less Braves was Nick Kean.

Fushimi, who tallied 75 points in 207 career regular season and playoff games over a three year span for the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League, is in the midst of serving a five-game suspension.

The Cougars led 2-0 after one period and 6-2 after two.

Greg Maggio, acquired last week, got the call in net for Victoria and picked up his first win of the season after making 25 saves.

After single-handedly defeating the Cougars back on September 25, Riley Mathieson stopped 16 shots en route to his fourth loss in a row.

Victoria finished 3-for-5 on the power play.  The Braves went 2-for-9.

Elsewhere in the VIJHL, Cameron Thompson scored twice including the game winner at 6:16 of the third period as the Peninsula Panthers shocked the Campbell River Storm 3-2 at the Panorama Recreation Centre.

Next game for the Cougars is Thursday, October 22 against the Oceanside Generals.  Game time at the Archie Browning Sports Centre, located at 1151 Esquimalt Road, is 7:00 p.m.
