VICTORIA, B.C. – Second year University of Victoria Vikes men’s golfer Andrew Funk successfully defended his 2014 Vikes Golf Shootout title today, Oct. 19, while the day was even sweeter as the Vikes men’s team won the team title as well. Funk shot a 66 in his second and final round today to take the tournament low, while the Vikes men shot a two-round score of 577 to win the tournament.
“It’s not really about what went well out on the course this week,” said Funk after the victory. “It’s about what we did prior to this. Two to three weeks before this I was really working hard for this moment and the support from all my team mates also makes a huge difference.”
Following two days and 36 holes, Funk amassed 10 birdies and was par on 23 holes. The Parkland Secondary grad finished with a 137 to take the title, just two strokes ahead of team mate and fellow second-year Vike Lawren Rowe. Rowe was also impressive in his final round shooting a 68 to finish with a two-round score of 139.
“I was hitting it pretty similar to yesterday but I made a lot of key putts and that was basically the difference from a one under to a six under,” added Funk.
The Vikes men were followed closely by the UBC Thunderbirds in the team standings. The T-Birds shot a collective 580 to take second place thanks to the leadership of Day 1 leader Trent Abraham who shot 73 in his second round to finish third overall (143).
“The rivalry we have with UBC is very strong so it was a bit of a cherry on top beating them,” said Vikes men’s head coach Justin Clews. “It was a very competitive field. Our top two players really pulled through today and got us the win.”
Alberta, Manitoba and Skagit Valley finished third, fourth and fifth respectively out of 11 competing teams.
Rounding out the Vikes line up today was rookie Jake Hamilton who finished tied for 18th alongside team mate Matthew Broughton. Both shot 152 across two days. Mike Griffin struggled in his second round, shooting an 82, to finish 155, despite logging a 73 on opening day.
The Vikes men also had three individuals competing including veteran Alex Cartwright who finished tied for 14th (75-75 : 150), Sean Hay (76-80 : 156) and Jesse Teron (80-80 : 160).
“It’s becoming more of an elite event now with the teams we have here compared to previous years so hopefully we can continue that,” added Clews about the addition of teams like George Fox University, Skagit Valley College, Corban University, Warner Pacific and Northwest Christian.
The Vikes have another quick turnaround as they had this week to San Diego, Calif. For the Cal State University and San Marcos Fall Classic, hosted Oct. 26-27.
