OTTAWA (CIS) – Following a pair of convincing road wins over Regina, the two-time reigning University Cup champion Alberta Golden Bears are the top-ranked team in CIS men’s hockey for the second time in as many national polls this season.

The Bears (3-0-1) received nine of 15 first-place votes and 144 points from the media panel to once again edge the UNB Varsity Reds (3-0-0), who merited the other first-place nods and 141 points to remain comfortably in second place.

Rounding out the second Top 10 of the campaign are the third-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies (3-0-0 / 119 points / no change), No. 4 Saskatchewan Huskies (4-0-0 / 103 / up one position), No. 5 UQTR Patriotes (3-1-0 / 71 / up three), No. 6 Acadia Axemen (2-1-0 / 61 / up one), No. 7 Windsor Lancers (3-0-1 / 58 / down one), No. 8 McGill Redmen (3-1-0 / 58 / down four), as well as the previously unranked No. 9 Western Mustangs (3-0-0 / 34) and No. 10 UBC Thunderbirds (3-0-1 / 12).

After splitting its season-opening series against Lethbridge two weeks ago, including a 2-0 win and a 3-2 loss in double overtime, top-ranked Alberta was back to its old dominating form this past weekend against Regina, peppering Cougars goaltenders with 119 shots in two games en route to 9-2 and 6-1 victories. The national champs resume league play with a home-and-away set against Mount Royal, Friday (7 p.m. MT) and Saturday (6 p.m. MT) on CanadaWest.TV

Meanwhile, Alberta’s three closest pursuers in the Top 10 maintained their perfect conference records this past week, but all survived close calls in doing so.

UNB edged StFX 4-3 in extra time and beat Dalhousie 3-2. Saint Mary’s outplayed St. Thomas 6-1 before defeating Moncton 4-3. Saskatchewan earned a pair of one-goal wins over Lethbridge, 3-2 and 4-3 in double OT.

Highlighting this week’s schedule are a pair of Friday night Top-10 battles, including No. 6 Acadia at No. 3 Saint Mary’s (7 p.m. AT on AUStv.ca) and No. 5 UQTR at No. 8 McGill (7 p.m. on Stretch TV).
