The No. 10 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the visiting University of Regina Cougars Friday night in Rutherford Rink en route to a 5-3 victory.
Hailey Tyndall and Leah Bohlken both scored in the first with Rachel Johnson scoring early in the second before the Cougars could get on the board.
With the win the Huskies improved to 5-1-0-1, while Regina drops to 3-3-1-0 with the loss.
Tyndall got the Huskie offense going with an unassisted goal 5:48 into the opening frame. After drawing a penalty midway through the first period, the rookie Bohlken got her first CIS marker at 12:57. Fifth-year’s Marley Ervine and Julia Flinton both assisted on the freshman’s first tally.
The Huskies would strike first again in the second period. Rachel Johnson notched her third of the season at 6:12 on helpers by Elizabeth Salyn and Ervine’s second of the night extending the lead to three.
The Cougars would get on the board with quick back-to-back goals just minutes later. Meghan Sherven scored her fourth of the season at 10:06 on assists from Nikki Watters-Matthes and Alexis Larson. Just 39 seconds later Bailey Braden scored her first of the season from captain Carleen Meszaros and Jaycee Magwood, cutting the deficit to one.
Flinton would stop the bleeding for the Huskies with a power play goal at 13:57 to put the Huskies up 4-2 with Ervine getting her third assist. Less than two mintues later, at 15:18, Ervine got her first goal of the game after setting up three others to restore the three-goal lead.
Caitlin Dempsey ended a wild second period with a goal at 16:40.
Cassidy Hendricks made 33 saves in goal for the Huskies while Jane Kish stopped 26 shots for the Cougars.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Regina.
