The majority of the crowd hadn’t settled in on Friday night when the Vernon Vipers went up 2-0 on the West Kelowna Warriors in the first 2:01 at Kal Tire Place. Luckily for the Warriors, they were able to battle back, winning 3-2.
The Vipers got early goals from Jimmy Lambert at 1:45 and Colton McCarthy at 2:01 to open the scoring. Lambert was able to find a loose puck in front while McCarthy finished off the rebound at the side of the net for his goal.West Kelowna responded 4:39 later, when Garrett Forster buried one on a pass from Connor Sodergren. The Warriors out-shot Vernon 21-10 in the frame.The Warriors tied the game halfway through the 2nd period, when Liam Blackburn’s shot from the top of the circles beat Andrew Shortridge under the bar.In the final minute of the frame, the Warriors got a power play and needed just 12 seconds for Jonathan Desbiens to score what turned out to be the Game Winner. Tanner Campbell had an assist on both goals.There wouldn’t be scoring in the 3rd period, but there was physical play and some big saves from Stephen Heslop. A skirmish at the end of the game yielded no penalties. Final shots were 48-26.The Warriors take on the Victoria Grizzlies Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at Royal Lepage Place.
