OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds and University of Saskatchewan Huskies both move past the two-time reigning champion Alberta Golden Bears in this week’s CIS men’s hockey national rankings.

UNB (4-0-0) moved up one position to No. 1 after receiving 15 of 16 first-place votes and 159 points from the media panel. It marks the first No. 1 ranking for the V-Reds since the Feb. 19, 2013 poll.

Saskatchewan (6-0-0) merited the remaining first-place nod and 137 points to move up two spots to No. 2, while Alberta (4-1-1) drops to third place after earning 132 points.

Rounding out the third Top 10 of the campaign are the fourth-ranked McGill Redmen (5-1-0 / 85 points / up four positions), No. 5 Western Mustangs (5-0-0 / 79 / up four), No. 6 UQTR Patriotes (4-1-1 / 67 / down one), No. 7 Acadia Axemen (3-1-1 / 55 / down one), No. 8 Saint Mary’s Huskies (3-2-0 / 49 / down five), No. 9 StFX X-Men (3-1-1 / 29 / previously unranked) and No. 10 UBC Thunderbirds (4-0-2 / 29 / no change).

Top-ranked UNB enjoyed a break in its AUS schedule this past week and took the opportunity to play a pair of exhibition games against NCAA opponents, dominating Maine 5-1 and battling Harvard to a 3-3 tie. The Varsity Reds will be tested this weekend in their return to league action as they host No. 7 Acadia on Friday (7 p.m. AT on AUStv.ca) and No. 8 Saint Mary’s on Saturday (7 p.m. AT on AUStv.ca).

Meanwhile in Canada West, Saskatchewan maintained its unblemished conference record with a 3-1, 6-2 sweep of provincial rival Regina, while Alberta split its two-game series against Mount Royal, losing the opener 4-2 before taking the rematch 2-1 in overtime. All eyes will be on Saskatoon this weekend as the Huskies host the Bears for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader (7 p.m. CT on CanadaWest.TV).

In the two Top-10 battles scheduled last weekend, Acadia topped Saint Mary’s 5-2 and McGill edged UQTR 5-4 in extra time.
