Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals will host the US Division leading Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday and Saturday night at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Saturday’s contest is the Royals annual Turn Back the Clock Night and will feature Victoria WHL alumni goaltender Grant Fuhr and former Royals’ captain Tyler Stahl. Both contests are scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
ON A ROLL: The Victoria Royals return to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre occupying top spot in the Western Hockey League and riding a six-game winning streak. Victoria has collected points in seven straight contests and have outscored their opponents by a margin of 29-12. Past the quarter mark of the season, the Royals are leading the Canadian Hockey League with the lowest goals against per game average at 1.90.
SPECIAL JERSEYS: During Saturday’s contest the team will wear vintage jerseys that salute previous Victoria hockey franchises. A selection of the Royals’ game worn jerseys will be available via auction by donation to the Victoria Royals Education & Scholarship Fund via silent auction during the game, and live auction post-game. SATURDAY – TURN BACK THE CLOCK NIGHT
Victoria WHL alumni Grant Fuhr and former Royal Tyler Stahl will be the recipients of the club’s Professional and Scholastic Alumni Achievement Awards respectively as part of the WHL’s 50th season. Goaltender Fuhr spent two seasons in Victoria (1979-81) and helped his team capture the 1981 WHL Championship. Stahl served as the Royals’ captain during the 2012-13 campaign. The former defender attended Olds College where he became a certified Agricultural Heavy Equipment Technician. He is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Business Management Degree at Athabasca University, while working in his trade.
– The Royals will honour the 50th season of the Western Hockey League by recognizing Grant Fuhr and Tyler Stahl in a pre-game ceremony.
– Fans will have a chance to purchase a copy of the WHL 50th season commemorative book at the Royals’ Team Store. A few lucky fans in attendance will have the opportunity to win a copy.
– The Royals are also proud to partner with the British Columbia Provincial Employees Community Services Fund (PECSF) for the 50/50 proceeds for this game, which will be divided among three groups: Victoria Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation, the Victoria Women’s Transition House Society and the Victoria Cool Aid Society.
