The first-ever ParaSport Development Week in Greater Victoria to promote inclusive sport and fitness programs taking place in the region, will run November 15-21. Hosted by the Victoria Wheelchair Sports Club and OneAbility and supported by partners Vikes Athletics, Camosun College, and PISE, this week will feature wheelchair sport demonstrations and educational sessions at different locations through Greater Victoria.
“This is a great opportunity for anyone of any ability to come out and learn about parasport,” said Andrea Carey, Canadian Paralympic Committee Board Member and part of the OneAbility organizing team. “Whether you want to try a new sport or learn how to adapt programs or activities to include people with disabilities, there are tremendous resources available to support you.”
Greater Victoria is a growing hub for disability sport. The resources and services offered here have made the region a destination for athletes targeting events like the Paralympics.
“There is a growing desire in Greater Victoria to support and develop grass roots through high performance parasport programming and training opportunities. We have year round accessible training spaces, experienced organizations and professionals working collaboratively through groups like OneAbility,” states PISE Adapted Strength & Conditioning Specialist and OneAbility member, Jonathan Ritchot. “All this is laying a foundation for future success and growth for our adapted community and in the world of Paralympic sport.”
The highlight of the week is the ParaSport Education Day on November 19 hosted at CARSA with a special Inclusive Programming Workshop for people working in the health and fitness industry. Jeff Scott, a local wheelchair rugby player and founder of the Live It! Love It! Foundation, which supports people with disabilities to pursue adventure sports, will give a keynote speech. The afternoon will feature an Open House for the public to come and try adapted sports and activities.
