Brandon, MB – Reid Gardiner’s second goal of the night stood as the game-winner as the Prince Albert Raiders defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings on Sundayevening at Westman Place.
Despite playing on their heels through large portions of the game, the Raiders saved their best effort for the third period where they managed to find the game-winning goal. Creating havoc in the neutral zone, Jesse Lees forced the play into the Brandon end where he took control and attempted a wrap around shot. His effort would not find the back of the net, but on the doorstep was Gardiner to put the Raiders in a lead they would not surrender.
Gardiner (2g) and Lees (2a) led the Raiders on Sunday with two points. Luke Coleman also found the back of the net for Prince Albert.
The Wheat Kings’ goals were scored by Luke Harrison and Kale Clague. Tanner Kaspick, John Quenneville and Stelio Mattheos had helpers.
Making his first start since returning from the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, Ian Scott made 33 saves on 35 shots. Jordan Papirny kicked out 16 of 19 shots faced.
The Wheat Kings outshot the Raiders 35-19. Prince Albert went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Brandon was 0-for-5.
The win keeps the Raiders on top in the East Division with a 13-5-2-1 record, while the Wheat Kings slip to 12-7-0-2.
The Prince Albert Raiders return to the Art Hauser Centre for a weekday affair with the Moose Jaw Warriors on Tuesday, November 17. Puck drop is 7:00 PM.
