Big weekend of curling as 13 championship berths up for grabs

Vancouver, BC (December 10, 2015) – Thirteen berths are up for grabs for curlers hoping to be crowned the best in BC. 

Ten teams will be locking up their spots for the 2016 Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men’s Curling Championship this weekend (Dec 11-13). Playdowns taking place at curling clubs in Fernie, Penticton, Parksville and New Westminster will see 30 competitive men’s teams battling it out for the spots. 

There are also three berths available for the 2016 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Best Western, at an open playdown this weekend (Dec 11-13) at the Golden Ears Winter Club in Maple Ridge.

The 2016 Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men’s Curling Championship, presented by EZ Rock and Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism, will take place at the Nelson Curling Centre from February 10-14. The teams that have already qualified include defending champions Team Cotter (Vernon), and Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) points winners Team Joanisse and Team Geall from the Royal City Curling Club.

The 2016 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Best Western, will take place at the Coquitlam Curling Club from January 19-24.  Defending champions Team Knezevic (Prince George) and CTRS points winners Team Scott (Kelowna) have already locked up their spots. They will be joined at the event by the qualifiers from the last open playdown, Team Gibson (Royal City), Team Thompson (Kamloops) and Team Van Osch (Nanaimo).

The top three teams of each gender will be featured on live Sportsnet broadcasts semi-finals and finals. Visit http://www.curlbc.ca/communications/tv-schedules/ for the broadcast schedule. 

The winner of the men’s event will go on to compete in the 2016 Tim Hortons Brier in Ottawa and the winner of the women’s event will go on to compete at the 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Grande Prairie.
