VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes basketball programs have been known for their many family connections and the 2016-17 women’s season will be no different as 17-year-old Calli McMillan-Beaucamp has committed to head coach Dani Sinclair‘s squad.

The five-foot-six guard is daughter to current Vikes men’s basketball head coach Craig Beaucamp and former Vike and CIAU national champion Tara Beaucamp (Gallaway).

“We are very proud that Calli will joining the Vikes family,” said five-time Canada West Men’s Coach of the Year Beaucamp. “Our family has significant ties to UVic. Tara spent five years playing at UVic winning a national championship (1992). I have coached at UVic for the past 15 years and Calli grew up attending Vikes games hearing many basketball stories from both of us.  Even though this was Calli’s decision we are very pleased that she is attending UVic.”

A graduate of Victoria’s Claremont Secondary, McMillan-Beaucamp aims to study Social Sciences at UVic, brings a wealth of provincial basketball experience and is no stranger to the Vikes scene.

“I am excited to be able to finally be a part of the Vikes program,” expressed the 2013 Island Senior Girls Basketball Championship MVP. “I have known (Vikes women’s basketball head coach Dani Sinclair) since I was pretty young but I have never been coached by her so I am looking forward to that. I know most of the girls on the team and looking forward to playing with one of my best friends again, Marissa Dheensaw.”

Dheensaw and McMillan-Beaucamp suited up together in high school at Claremont Secondary and were also team mates on the B.C. Under 17 provincial team. McMillan-Beaucamp has previously competed with the B.C. Under 17 and Under 15 team, as well as the Under 14 Summer Games team. A few of her many accolades include being named a First Team All-Star at the 2012-13 Island Junior Basketball Championship, a First Team All-Star at the 2014-15 Island Senior Basketball Championship and being named Claremont Junior Female Athlete of the Year in both 2012-13 and 2013-14.

“My parents are both very competitive and have been my biggest supporters,” said McMillan-Beaucamp of her committed Vikes parents. “My mom has been my high school coach for the past four years and my dad has coached my Summer Games team and the U14 and U15 regional teams. Last summer, he passed up a potential opportunity to work with the men’s National team program to coach a U17/U18 girls club team on the Island that included myself and Vikes Marissa Dheensaw and Avery Snider.”

McMillan-Beaucamp is expected to bolster the growing Vikes women’s basketball team and is used to performing at a higher level despite being a younger age. With the Under 17 provincial team she competed as an underage player, while when winning the nod for Island Senior Girls Championship MVP she was only in Grade 10. She helped her team to the Island Junior Girls Championship title in 2012-13, and the Island Senior Girls title in 2013-14. At the BC Summer Games in 2014 she was a silver medalist and she has also competed at both the Under 15 and Under 17 National Championships with Team B.C.

“We are excited to welcome Calli into our team next season,” said Vikes women’s basketball head coach Sinclair, a former national champion with the Vikes. “Calli is another great addition to a growing list of local players in our program. She has almost literally grown up in the UVic gym and we believe that this familiarity will help with her transition to our team and to CIS basketball. Calli is a great athlete and a fierce competitor and we’re excited to see how she will contribute right away”

McMillan-Beaucamp will look to add to the championship tradition of the Vikes women’s basketball program beginning in the fall of 2016.
