Kelowna, BC- The Victoria Royals dropped a 5-4 decision to the Kelowna Rockets in a back-and-forth match-up between the top two teams in the Western Conference on Saturday night.
The Royals, second in the BC Division, and the Rockets, first in the WHL, have now split the season series at two games apiece.
Victoria trailed Kelowna 4-3 with over six minutes remaining in the third period, before the two teams traded goals. The Rockets’ Dillon Dube registered his second of the night to put the home team up by two, but that would be answered by Victoria’s Logan Fisher 14 seconds later to make it a 5-4 game. The Royals had a flurry of chances in the dying minutes, but were unable to find the equalizer. Victoria’s Jared Dmytriw scored a pair of markers, while Tyler Soy also tallied. Kelowna’s first four goals were scored by Dube, Nick Merkley, Kole Lind, and Justin Kirkland.
Victoria goaltender Coleman Vollrath made 19 saves on the 24 shots he faced throughout the contest. Kelowna countered with Michael Herringer who stopped 29 of the 33 pucks he faced.
Both teams capitalized once on the powerplay for a 1/6=16.7% mark on the night.
Victoria returns home for a pair of games against the Tri-City Americans this Tuesday and Wednesday. Puck drop for both games are slated for 7:05 p.m.
