Cougars handed the Nanaimo Buccaneers a 3-2 defeat on Sunday

NANAIMO, B.C. – Nathan Looysen scored the game winner late in the second period as the Victoria Cougars handed the Nanaimo Buccaneers a 3-2 defeat on Sunday.

With just over three minutes remaining in the period, Looysen backhanded the puck over the blocker of Alex Orth to give Victoria its 18th win in a row.

Also scoring for the Cougars, who improves to 28-4-1-0 on the season, were Cody Hodges and Brett Lervold.

It was the first game of the New Year for both teams.

Trent Bell had both goals for Nanaimo which included scoring on a shorthanded breakaway to tie the game at 2-2.

It was a scrappy game with plenty of ten-minute misconducts doled out by referee Brady Casparie.

Gregory Maggio earned the win in net with 25 saves.

Victoria finished 1-for-6 with the man advantage; meanwhile, the Buccaneers went 0-for-3.

Orth turned aside 29 shots.

Nanaimo falls to 17-13-1-2.

Elsewhere in the VIJHL, the hometown Campbell River Storm held on for a 4-3 victory over the Comox Valley Glacier Kings.

Next game for Victoria is Wednesday, January 6 against the Westshore Wolves.  Game time at The Q Centre, located at 1767 Old Island Highway, is 7:00 p.m.
