VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team and head coach Craig Beaucampare pleased to announce the commitment of 17-year-old guard Scott Kellum for the 2016-17 season. The Issaquah, Wash. native will join the Vikes after graduation from Issaquah High School where he helped his team to a third and fourth place finish at the past two 4A State High School Basketball Championships.

“Scott is what we like to talk about when we say ‘student-athlete,’ describes Beaucamp. “He is a 90 plus student and a great basketball player. I have known him since he was in grade 10 and his self-discipline on and off the court give him an excellent opportunity to be very successful at the university level.”

A two-time Scholar Athlete Award winner, in both 2014 and 2015, Kellum intends to major in business at UVic. Throughout his time in high school Kellum lead his team to a third and fourth place finish at the respective 2014 and 2015 4A State High School Basketball Championships. Kellum was named the Most Improved High School Basketball player in 2014 and won an All-King Co 4A Boys Honourable Mention award in 2015, the same year he was named captain of the team.

“I am extremely excited to come play basketball at the University of Victoria,” said Kellum. “It is a great program and I can’t wait to be able to come in and make my own contributions. UVic has a great atmosphere that I am thrilled to be a part of.”

Kellum has also played one year of elite and six years with the AAU Friends of Hoop program. In a recent Jan. 5 game, Kellum netted 41 points to lead the No. 5-ranked Issaquah to an 84-70 win over Bothell. Kellum totaled 10 points in the opening quarter and followed that up with 17 points in the second, and 14 in the second half.

The six-foot-one guard has helped the Issaquah Eagles to currently sit undefeated, 9-0, in the Kingco Athletic Conference.

“We are very excited to bring Scott and his family into Vikes Nation,” adds Beaucamp. “He fits in very nicely with our current players.”

Kellum will suit up for the Vikes in the fall of 2016-17.
