VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men and women’s track teams concluded their first indoor event of the season setting multiple personal bests at the University of Washington Indoor Preview in Seattle, Wash. on Jan. 16.
All three of the Vikes men who competed in the 1000-metre race – first years Timothy Longley (2:31.35), Max Serviss (1:27.59) and second year Isaac Penner (2:26.49) – started off their 2016 season by setting personal best times. First year Ryan Korol raced to a personal best and a first-place finish in his section of the 600-metre with a time of 1:21.55.
The men’s 4×800-metre relay team of Peter Oxland, Thomas Oxland, Longley and Penner took home the Vikes’ best team performance of the day with a first place finish of 7:43.30.
On the women’s side, second-year Vike Caroline Harrell finished third in the 600-metre event with a time of 1:40.95. Fellow teammates Shauna McInnis and Emma Bibault raced to 9:36.74 and to 10:02.79 times, respectively, in the 3000-metre race. Third year Andrea Robinson finished the 1000-metre in 3:00.53 and fifth-year Vike and 2014 Vikes Athlete of the Year Rachel Francois finished the 1-mile in 4:48.85.
“(The UW Preview) was a good opportunity for our runners to get some early season races in and a few of them managed to improve on their personal bests,” said Vikes track head coach Brent Fougner. “Hopefully those personal bests can be turned into CIS qualifications as the season rolls on.”
The schedule continues for the Vikes in Washington with the UW Invitational on Jan. 29-30 before the Husky Classic takes place from Feb. 13-14 in Seattle.
