PENTICTON, BC-The points may have not mattered in on the stat sheet but they meant something to Luke Voltin. The Penticton Vees forward scored twice in a four-goal second period for the Vees, en route to a 6-1 win over Red Bull Salzburg in exhibition action at the SOEC Wednesday.
Scott Conway scored a pair as well and the Vees got singles from Griffin Mendel and AP call-up Cassidy Bowes in the win. Zach Driscoll went the distance in goal, stopping 26 of 27 shots, as the Vees are the first BCHL team beat the Austrian club.
Conway opened the scoring 1:17 into the first period after he banged-in a centering pass in the crease from Easton Brodzinski. The pass came from behind the net and Conway’s quick release slid underneath Red Bull goaltender Mark Vlahovic.
Penticton blew the game open early in the second, scoring three goals inside the first six-minutes. Voltin picked up his first of two on the night at 2:39 when he ripped a one-timer, from the slot, over the Salzburg goalie; Jones firing a pass out front from behind the net.
Then Cassidy Bowes finished off a pretty passing play in the Salzburg end five-minutes in to put the home team up three. Conway dragged the puck through his legs, back in front and then over to Bowes for the tap-in; the 16-year-old’s first with the Vees.
45-seconds later Voltin bagged his second to push the lead to four. After Darius Davidson was stopped on the doorstep, Voltin crashed the crease for the rebound at 5:45.
Maximilian Egger got the Red Bulls on the scoresheet midway through the second, when tipped-in a point-shot at 11:37 but the Vees added two more to cruise to a comfortable win.
Conway restored the four-goal lead with under four-minutes left in the middle stanza. On a power-play, Dante Fabbro fired a slap-pass from the boards that was redirected in by Conway in front at 16:10; his second of the night.
Mendel added the finishing touches late in the third when he blasted his point-shot through everyone at 17:11.
