VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s track team head to Edmonton, Alta. this weekend, Jan. 22-24, for the Annual Golden Bear Open. Seven Vikes men and two women will compete across a variety of events, while the most senior of the group are fourth-year transfer Shoayb Bascal and third year Andrea Robinson. The event is being hosted at the University of Alberta Pavilion.
Bascal, a member of the 2015 CIS cross-country championship-winning team, turns indoor to try his talents on the track racing the 3-km and 1500-m events. First-year Vike Derrick Evans will compete in the same events as Bascal, while second-year Vike Isaac Penner will race the 1500-m. Rookies Tim Longley and Thomas Oxland will race the 100-m event, while fellow first years Ryan Korol and Max Serviss will compete in the 600-m event.
Longley, Oxland, Penner and Serviss will race the only relay event for the Vikes in the 4×800-m.
On the women’s side just two women will be competing. Robinson will race the senior 600-m and 1000-m events, while first year Andie Wood will take on the longer distances in the 3-km and 1500-m.
Races begin Jan. 22 at 6:00 p.m. pacific time and start at 12:00 p.m. on Jan. 23. For more full results visit trackie.ca.
