The Everett Silvertips brought their league-leading defensive game to town and the Edmonton Oil Kings not only matched it but did one better in a 1-0 win Friday night.
The Oil Kings received top notch goaltending from Payton Lee who stopped all 27 shots he faced for his first shutout as an Oil King and yet another powerplay goal from Dario Meyer to seal the win.
“I thought his (Lee) saves were very timely,” said Head Coach Steve Hamilton. “We had a couple of pretty substantial breakdowns and he stood tall. I thought he was very composed tonight. The guys battled hard in front of him, but there were times when we really needed to lean on him and he stood up to the test.”
In Kevin Constantine-like fashion, the Silvertips lead the Western Hockey League with just 2.1 goals allowed per game. Hart, a Sherwood Park, AB native, has a stingy 1.88 G.A.A. and leads the league in G.A.A., wins, save percentage and shutouts. But Meyer was able to solve him taking a beautiful pass from Brett Pollock burying it for his seventh goal of the season and second powerplay goal in the last two games.
“It was a tough game,” said Meyer. “Everett was pretty good. We scored on the chance we had and I’m just happy about the win.”
Lee, who was the game’s first star, felt his team played a tight defensive game in front of him.
“The boys played really good so it wasn’t that tough for me. They did a really good job of keeping the shots to the outside, which makes my job easy,” said Lee. The shutout was his sixth career in the WHL.
The Oil Kings will travel down the QE2 to the windy city of Lethbridge for a date against the Hurricanes Sunday. Game time is 6pm and you can catch all the action on TSN 1260.
