Abbotsford, BC—The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s basketball team experienced something they had only once before this calendar year.  That was a loss.

The University of Fraser Valley Cascades downed the WolfPack 57-56 to kick off a Canada West weekend series on Friday (Feb 12).  The defeat snapped TRU’s seven game winning streak and dropped their record to 13-4 as they fell out of a tie for first place in the Explorer Division.  MacEwan University Griffins won their fifth in a row Friday night to move to 14-3 on the year.

The victory by Fraser Valley ups their record to 10-7 and a tie for third place in the Explorer Division. The Cascades have won their last three starts.

“We didn’t play with as much passion as Fraser Valley did tonight,” stated TRU head coach Scott Reeves. “ We gave up too many offensive rebounds and couldn’t make our free throws down the stretch.”

Fraser Valley had 16 offensive rebounds led by Taylor Claggett with five. She wound up with a game high 10 rebounds and had nine points.  The Cascades were led by Katie Brink with 18 points while Kayli Satori added 14 points.

For the WolfPack: Emma Piggin (2nd year, guard, Kamloops, BC) had 15 points while Michelle Bos (2nd year, guard, Surrey, BC) chipped in 19th 14.  She added nine rebounds as did Jordan MacLean (4th year, forward, Hinton, AB).

The two teams will play again Saturday (Feb 13) in Abbotsford. The WolfPack will return home to close out the regular season next weekend (Feb 19-20) when they entertain the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat on the Warner Rentals Court at the Tournament Capital Centre. Tip off on Friday (Feb 19) will be 6 pm.
