The Portland Winterhawks (28-25-2-0) earned a 3-2 win Friday over the visiting Everett Silvertips (32-18-2-2) at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Portland opened the scoring 5:41 into the game when Colton Veloso made a great backhand pass to Alex Overhardt, who banged it into the net for a 1-0 lead the Hawks took into the second.
Everett evened the game 2:26 into the second on a goal by Jake Christiansen to make it 1-1, but at 8:55 the Hawks regained a lead when a scrum in front of the Everett net ended with Rodrigo Abols banging it in for a 2-1 advantage.
With time winding down in the period, the Hawks added to the lead with just 15.3 seconds remaining as Keoni Texeira’s blast from the point beat netminder Carter Hart to stake Portland to a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.
The third period opened with Everett making a change in net, with Mario Petit taking over between the pipes for Hart.
It remained a two-goal game until there was 1:47 remaining in the third, when Carson Stadnyk scored to bring Everett within one at 3-2, but that was as close as they’d get.
Adin Hill was sensational in net for Portland, stopping 44 of the 46 shots he faced, including 18 saves in the third.
Overhardt finished with two points with his goal and an assist, his third multi-point game of the season.
The Hawks will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Seattle to take on the Thunderbirds at 7 p.m. in a game that will be televised live on Portland’s CW32.
