MILL BAY, B.C. – John Kretzschmar scored three goals and added one assist to lead the Victoria Cougars past the Kerry Park Islanders 6-1 on Saturday night.

Also scoring for Victoria was Dom Kolbeins, Nathan Looysen, and Jordan Passmore.

Anthony Ciurro turned aside 29 shots for his league-leading 25th win.

The win moves Mark Van Helvoirt’s squad into a first place tie overall with the Campbell River Storm.  The Cougars have two games in hand on their North Island counterpart heading into the final week of regular season play.

Kyle Bell, a 17-year-old rookie playing in his first VIJHL game, scored on a power play for the Islanders.

Taking the loss in net for Kerry Park was Ty Rennie who faced 47 shots.

Victoria went 3-for-9 with the man advantage while the Islanders went 1-for-6.

Elsewhere in the VIJHL, Jake McKenzie scored the game winner midway through the second period as the Comox Valley Glacier Kings defeated the Nanaimo Buccaneers 3-2 at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.

Next game for the Cougars is Thursday, February 18 against the Kerry Park Islanders.  Game time at the Archie Browning Sports Centre, located at 1151 Esquimalt Road, is 7:00 p.m.
