With only two weeks of conference competition remaining, the Camosun College Chargers basketball squads are heading into the home stretch of the 2015-16 PACWEST regular season and rounding the corner to the Provincial Championships which will be hosted by Capilano University, March 3-5 in North Vancouver. This weekend, the teams travel to the Mainland to take on the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles (KPU) and the Columbia Bible College Bearcats (CBC).
For the Chargers women, it will be do or die this weekend as the team goes to battle to solidify their ticket to the PACWEST playoffs. At 5-13, the #6 Chargers are tied in games with CBC who currently sit outside the bracket of qualifying teams using the tiebreaker.
“This weekend’s games are must wins for us,” says Chargers Women’s Head Coach Carl Macdonald. “We know we need two wins to be sure of earning a play-off spot. If we split, there will still be an opportunity to get the second win, it just becomes more difficult as our last game is against VIU who is currently number one.”
“Our first task is to play a solid game against Kwantlen. We believe KPU wouldn’t mind playing the role of spoiler, therefore, we will need to be diligent in our execution of our game plan. Columbia is a solid team that is playing very well right now. Involving every player and tightening up our play will help provide us with the outcome we are looking for.”
In men’s action, the Chargers have secured a spot among the Top 6 to earn a playoff berth and will be using the next two weeks of league play to tune up their game.
“We’re currently dealing with a number of injuries but we have time to sort it out,” comments Head Coach Scot Cuachon. “We’re working on our consistency and how to take care of the ball. There have been too many times when we’ve had the lead over a good team only to take our foot off the gas. That can’t happen if we want to be successful competing at Provincials.”
