VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s golf team will send the same five golfers that won last year’s Master’s College Spring Invitational to Santa Clarita, Cali. to defend their title at this year’s rendition of the tournament. The MC Spring Invitational is set to take place Feb. 29-Mar. 1 at Robinson Ranch Golf Course and is a three-round, 54-hole competition.
Fourth years Matthew Broughton and Alex Cartwright and second years Lawren Rowe, Mike Griffinand Andrew Funk will all return to the MC Spring Invitational for the second consecutive year after winning the event in 2015.
Broughton replaces fourth year Sean Hay from the Vikes’ most recent roster that competed and finished eighth in the Arizona Christian Spring Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. on Feb. 15-16.
“Our overall goal is to defend our title as champions,” said Vikes men’s golf head coach Justin Clews. “The opposition has improved vastly from last year, but improving on last season’s score should put us on top.”
At last year’s event, the Vikes shot a three-round score of 884 (291-293-300) with Griffin leading the Vikes to the title with a tournament score of 217 (70-72-75). The Vikes took the title over North American Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) highly ranked sides Oklahoma Baptist and Concordia and the hosts Master’s College.
Among the field this year are four teams within the NAIA top-20, including the Vikes and Arizona Christian, who hosted last week’s ACU Spring Invitational.
“The course is short and tight and demands a lot of accuracy,” added Clews, whose team has competed in the MC Spring Invitational every year since 2013. “Off the tee you won’t see too many drivers from the golfers as they aim to attack the greens.”
