VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men and women’s track teams added a gold, silver and two bronze medals on day two, Feb. 27, of the 2016 Canada West Track & Field Championship in Saskatoon, Sask. to bring their final medal count to nine. Both Vikes teams finished eighth in the Canada West men and women’s team standings with 41 and 18 points, respectively.

The Saskatchewan Huskies men took away the Canada West title on home soil with 75 points, beating out the second-place Alberta Golden Bears and third-place Calgary Dinos. On the women’s side, the Alberta Pandas claimed their first title since 1983 with a 101-point first-place performance. The Dinos grabbed silver with 72.5 points – four ahead of hosts Saskatchewan in third with 68.5.

Fourth-year Vike Cody Therrien was golden in the men’s 1500-metre, finishing first with a time of 3:53.93. The men’s team of Ryan Korol, Thomas Oxland, Tyler Smith and Brendon Restall grabbed the silver medal for the Vikes on day two behind hosts Saskatchewan by beating out the Manitoba Bisons by 12 hundredths of a second.

Fifth-year Vike Shauna McInnis earned herself her first individual Canada West medal on her final try with a 1:32.71 bronze-medal winning performance in the 1500-metre. Counterpart and first-year Vike Vanessa Sjoberg was not to be outdone, however, by earning bronze and qualifying for the CIS championship with a time of 1:32.71 in the 600-metre.

“The team had an awesome day today led by Cody’s gold in the men’s 1500-metre and Vanessa and Shauna’s first individual Canada West medals,” said Vikes head coach Brent Fougner. “Cody rebounded from a disappointing 3000-metre to run a perfect race and win the 1500-metre while Shauna ran strong to hold onto a bronze in the 1500-metre, which was a nice race to finish her Canada West career off on. Men’s 4×400-metre ran a gutsy race in the slow section to steal silver and a CIS spot.”

The Vikes now set their sites on the 2016 CIS Track Championship on Toronto, Ont. from Mar.10-12 hosted by York University.
