Diverse group highlights Canada West men’s basketball all-star and all-rookie teams

NEW WESTMINSTER – The Canada West men’s basketball all-star and all-rookie teams were unveiled Monday, with a total of 12 schools, five countries and six provinces represented.

The all-star and all-rookie teams were selected by the conference’s 17 head coaches, who also selected the Canada West major award winners, which will be revealed Wednesday, March 9.

The Canada West first team of all-stars was emblematic of the conference’s diverse group of student-athletes, with Calgary’s Thomas Cooper (Chattanooga, Tennessee), University of the Fraser Valley’s Kevon Parchment (Scarborough, ON), UBC’s Jordan Jensen-Whyte (Calgary, AB), Thompson Rivers’ Josh Wolfram (Kamloops, BC), and Lethbridge’s Brandon Brine (Adelaide, Australia) all making the top squad.

Along with Cooper and Brine, two other international students made Canada West all-star teams, as TRU’s Volodymyr Iegorov of Dontesk, Ukraine and Calgary’s Lars Schlueter from Ulm, Germany both cracked the conference’s third team.

Leading the way with respect to players selected from a single school was TRU, who along with Wolfram and Iegorov, saw Reese Pribilsky (third team) and Jeff Tubbs (all-rookie) honoured.

Plenty of all-stars and all-rookies will be on display this weekend, as the Calgary Dinos host the Canada West Men’s Basketball Final Four (schedule below).

A pair of teams at the conference Final Four will punch their ticket to CIS Final 8, joining the host UBC Thunderbirds at the event March 17-20 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver.
