The West Kelowna Warriors took a 2-1 series lead in their Interior Division Semi-Final with a 4-1 victory over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on Monday night at the Shaw Centre.
The Silverbacks opened the scoring while on the power play, getting a goal from Colton Thibault with Bryan Basilico in the box.
Jonathan Desbiens tied the game with just over three minutes remaining in the opening period on a strange series of events. With Kylar Hope heading off on a change, he never got there, seeing a loose puck coming his way. That puck hit a water bottle that was dropped on the ice from the ‘Backs bench, and Hope was able to spring Desbiens in on a partial break. Quick hands and a nifty shot upstairs had the Warriors section behind the bench going nuts.
West Kelowna would score a pair in the second period, including a power play goal as they widened their lead.
A great move in tight from Kyle Marino gave West Kelowna a 2-1 lead on a nice move to the backhand as he walked in from the blue and beat Angus Redmond.
Garrett Forster made it 3-1 on the power play with a shot from the corner that deflected off Ayrton Nikkel and over Redmond and in.
In the third period, the Warriors scored once on five power play attempts, as Desbiens picked up his second of the night and third of the series on a pass from below the goal line from Rylan Yaremko.
Matthew Greenfield made 35 saves picking up first star honours for the second consecutive night.
Game four goes Tuesday night in Salmon Arm, while Game five will take place at Royal LePage Place in West Kelowna on Friday night.
