LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western women’s volleyball opposite Elly Wendel (Caronport, Sask.) was named the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female athlete of the week for the period ending March 6, 2016.

Wendel, a fourth-year biblical studies student from Caronport, Sask., was named tournament MVP at the Canada West Final Four after she helped the nationally fourth-ranked Spartans repeat as conference champions thanks to a pair of thrilling five-set wins over No. 3 Alberta and top-ranked UBC Okanagan. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter tallied 42 kills, 26 digs, 10 blocks and 48 points over the two-game set, including a match-high 22 kills in Friday’s semifinal against Alberta as TWU overcame a two-set deficit, and 20 more kills – also a match-high – in Saturday’s gold-medal final versus UBCO. Wendel and the Spartans are now off to the CIS championship in Brandon (March 11-13), where they hope to successfully defend their national title.

Saint Mary’s basketball player Angelina Carvery, Montreal volleyball player Marie-Alex Bélanger and Toronto volleyball player Alina Dormann were also nominated for the women’s award.

On the men’s side, Windsor’s Alex Campbell, a fifth-year graduate studies student from Brampton, Ont., averaged 35 points per game in the first two rounds of the playoffs to send the Lancers to their fourth straight OUA Final Four appearance. The 6-foot-2 guard opened the post-season last Wednesday with a sensational 37-point, 10-rebound double-double in an 82-73 win over visiting Laurentian and was at it again in Saturday’s quarter-final at McMaster, playing all 40 minutes and finishing with a game-high 33 points, five boards and three steals as Windsor upset the nationally fifth-ranked Marauders 79-78. Campbell and the Lancers face No. 1 Ryerson Friday night in Toronto in the OUA semis.
