SEATTLE RALLIES TO DEFEAT ROYALS
Starter Taijuan Walker tossed 3.0 strong innings.
PEORIA, Ariz. – The Mariners rallied from an early deficit and pulled away late in a 7-5 Cactus League win over the Kansas City Royals in front of 5,921 fans at Peoria Stadium.
Seattle rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie. Benji Gonzalez led off the inning with a bunt single to second base, moved to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a fly ball by Stefen Romero. Ed Lucas followed with a ground rule double to right center to break the tie and he scored on a single by Dae-Ho Lee. Lee later scored on a fielding error by the first baseman.
Seattle got on the board in the third inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Chris Iannetta and added a second run later in the inning as Kyle Seager singled to score Leonys Martin. Trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning, Seattle rallied for two runs to take the lead on a two-out double by Romero to score Gonzalez and a two-out single by Lucas that scored Romero.
Starter Taijuan Walker had a strong outing, striking out 5 in his 3.0 innings of work and giving up only a solo home run in the third inning to Drew Butera. Reliever Cody Martin followed him and allowed two runs in the fourth inning, his first inning of work, before retiring the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings.
Washington native Adrian Sampson (Skyline HS) allowed one run in his two innings of work and was credited with the win.
The Mariners (4-4) return to Cactus League play tomorrow (Thursday, March 10) at 12:10 PT/1:10 MT at Peoria Stadium against the Chicago Cubs. The game will be televised on ROOT SPORTS NW and broadcast in the Seattle are on 710 ESPN Seattle (delayed)and the Mariners Radio Network. Left-handed pitcher Wade Miley is scheduled to start for the Mariners against Cubs left-hander Jon Lester.
