VICTORIA – All three of the University of Victoria Vikes rugby teams have advanced to the quarter-finals with each squad sitting atop their respective groups after Day 1 of the University Sevens Championship in Burnaby, B.C. on Friday, Mar. 11.
Both UVic 1 and UVic 2 on the men’s side went 3-0 on Friday, including UVic 1 shutting out the Calgary Dinos, Waterloo Warriors and Regina Cougars by a collective score of 143-0. UVic 1 downed Calgary 45-0 in their opening game before trouncing Regina 50-0 and Waterloo 48-0.
UVic 2 was close to matching their counterparts by shutting out their opponents in two out of three games on Friday, but had to navigate themselves to a final whistle win over Queens 21-19 with a last-second kick in their second game of the day. Before that, UVic 2 shut out UBC Okanagan 26-0 before winning convincingly over Lethbridge 51-0 to close out Day 1.
On the women’s side, the Vikes encountered a roadblock to begin the day before recovering admirably in the day’s final two games. The Vikes fell to conference rivals the Alberta Pandas 22-12 before a 47-7 win over Saskatchewan and 38-0 shutout of Toronto.
“The first game we came out flat didn’t adapt to Alberta’s style of play,” said Vikes women’s rugby head coach Brittany Waters. “We were in need of wins in our final two games and regrouped well by moving the ball wide and away from contact. We were able to use our full team in today’s final games and our subs stepped up when we needed it. It’s a nice thing to have going into the quarter-finals knowing the whole lineup is ready to go.”
UVic 1 and 2 enter the quarter-finals seeded at #1 and #3 respectively with UVic 1 facing Calgary and UVic 2 earning a matchup with Alberta. The Vikes women will face the two-time defending champions the McMaster Marauders in their quarter-final match, which kicks off at 8:22 a.m. PST.
