The West Kelowna Warriors advanced to the Interior Division Finals with a 4-2 win over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in Game 6 on Saturday night in the Shuswap.
Brett Mennear got the Warriors on the board halfway through the opening period with West Kelowna a man short. Kylar Hope got the puck into neutral ice on a 2 on 1 and over to Mennear, who went to the backhand around Angus Redmond to open the scoring.
Garrett Forster scored a timely goal in the final two minutes of the first period, beating Redmond between the legs with a shot after good work down low from Liam Blackburn and Quin Foreman.
Salmon Arm came out strong in the second period, cutting the deficit to one with a goal from Carson Bolduc off a rebound.
The Warriors were able to re-establish their two-goal lead by scoring on the power play halfway through the middle frame. Jonathan Desbiens had the goal from the side of the net, after the puck bounced around in the slot.
The ‘Backs were within a goal again in the final minute of the second stanza, as Chase Zieky poked one over the line past Matthew Greenfield.
Salmon Arm kept pushing for the tying goal in the third, but it was Kyle Marino who put the Warriors up by two beating Redmond from the circle as he used Bryan Basilico as a decoy on a 2 on 1.
West Kelowna’s fans behind the bench saluted their team in the final few minutes of the game, as the time expired.
The Warriors organization would like to congratulate the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on a great season and series, and wish their graduating players and those moving on the best of luck in their hockey careers.
