VICTORIA – The Annual Keg Spring Cup hosted by the University of Victoria Vikes men and women’s soccer teams returns for another year this weekend, Mar. 19-20 at Centennial Stadium. The two-day tournament marks the end of Spring season soccer for the Vikes and features five separate schools, four men and women’s teams, including strong Canada West opposition in the Trinity Western Spartans, Fraser Valley Cascades, Alberta Pandas, and pacific rivals the UBC Thunderbirds.
The Vikes women face Alberta at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday for the first time since a 3-1 Canada West regular season win over the Pandas on Sept. 19, 2015. Veteran Emma Greig, second year Emily Lieuwen and rookie Kiara Kilbey netted for the home side in the victory. Before that, the last time the Vikes and Pandas met was back in the 2014 rendition of the Keg Spring Cup when Greig had the lone goal in a 1-0 victory for the Vikes.
In the other women’s fixture, 2015 national champions UBC and runners-up Trinity Western meet at 10:00 a.m. for the first time since their CIS championship final matchup on Nov. 15, 2015 when the T-Birds claimed their sixth title at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver, B.C.
On the men’s side, the Vikes hit the field at 4:00 p.m. to meet their 2015 Canada West Final Four opponent Trinity Western, who they defeated 2-1 back on Nov. 6, 2015 to advance to the gold-medal game thanks to goals from second year Michael Baart and fourth year Sam Prette. Alternatively, the Canada West champion T-Birds will go head-to-head with the Cascades at 12:00 p.m. following the women’s UBC and Trinity Western matchup.
Following the first day of competition, the losers of each game will meet in the consolation round on Sunday morning while the finals kick off at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. for the women and men, respectively, following the consolation games.
With a star-studded attendance, it’s safe to say there will be no shortage of quality at this year’s Keg Spring Cup.
“The Keg Spring Cup is the culmination of the Spring season that began in January for our athletes,” said Vikes women’s soccer head coach Tracy David. “Our players have been hard at work, regularly practicing and playing every week since the Canada West season ended. It’s a chance for some players to get some extra playing time, but it’s also a great opportunity to say goodbye to our veteran players like Emma Greig.
“It’s a measuring stick for all teams against quality opposition as they look ahead to their next seasons. There’s still a lot of bragging rights up for grabs between each team.”
In addition to the Keg Spring Cup this weekend, the Vikes women will welcome the USA U-17 Olympic Development Program (ODP) at 4:30 p.m. on Mar. 22 in Centennial Stadium. The team includes players from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Virginis and other eastern states who are on the fringe of their national teams, setting the stage for a competitive week of soccer.
