VICTORIA – The Trinity Western men’s soccer team played to a 0-0 tie with UBC in the consolation final of the Keg Cup Sunday in Victoria.

A day after falling to Victoria in the semifinals, the Spartans were step-for-step with the Thunderbirds over 90 minutes, but were forced to settle for a draw after being held off the scoresheet.

Vito Poletto (Calgary) and Leighton Johnson (Calgary) had the Spartans best chances to score, but both of them came up empty, leaving the Spartans with a tie and a loss for their weekend efforts.

“It was probably a fair result,” said Spartans coach Mike Shearon. “Both teams had some pretty good chances. I thought our back line were fantastic today. I asked the team to put in a solid 90-minute hard-working defensive performance and hopefully find a few goals and we did well to keep UBC off the scoreboard. We had a couple chances, but just couldn’t put one home today and so it’s obviously difficult to win games when you don’t take your chances.

“I’m super proud of the boys and the back four and the work they put in to make sure we got the shutout and gave ourselves a chance to win.”

The Spartans will now prepare for their final two games of the spring season, with TWU hosting Seattle Pacific Apr. 2 and Western Washington Apr. 16.
