Felix Hernandez Posts 6.0 Scoreless Innings

PEORIA, Ariz. – Leonys Martín connected on a 1-0 pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning for a solo home run to right field, sending the Mariners past the White Sox, 5-4, in front of 9,527 at Peoria Stadium. Felix Hernandez blanked the White Sox for 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing 5 hits while striking out 3. Dan Altavilla earned the win in relief to improve to 2-0 this spring.

For the 4th straight game, the Mariners scored in the first inning. Norichika Aoki led off with a single up the middle and scored on Adam Lind’s sacrifice fly to right field. Kyle Seager scored on a fielding error with two outs in the inning to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead.

In his 3rd start of the spring, Hernandez allowed at least one base hit in each of the first 4 innings, but came away unscathed each time. Hernandez did not walk a batter and retired the last 8 White Sox batters he faced, two on strikeouts.

Making his first appearance since March 15, Justin De Fratus allowed a grand slam home run to Austin Jackson – his second home run of the spring – in the top of the seventh as the White Sox took a 4-2 lead.

Tony Zych worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, recording 2 strikeouts to bring his total to 13 strikeouts this spring.

With the Mariners trailing the White Sox, 4-2, Robinson Canó doubled to right field to begin the bottom of the ninth. Nelson Cruz evened the score at 4-4 with a towering home run to left-center field – his 3rd home run in Cactus League play – sending the game to extra innings.

With one out in the 10th, Martín belted the walk-off home run to complete the late-inning comeback.
