2016 VIJHL Championship Series now a best-of-three series

The Victoria Cougars continue their best-of-seven playoff series with the Campbell River Storm Sunday afternoon.

Game time at the Archie Browning Sports Centre, located at 1151 Esquimalt Road, is 3:30 p.m.

The 2016 VIJHL Championship Series is currently knotted at two games apiece.

Game 6 will be played Tuesday night in Campbell River and if necessary, Game 7 will be back at the Archie Browning Sports Centre on Thursday night.

Victoria evened the series in Campbell River Friday night following its 3-2 win.  Dom Kolbeins, Ryan Lawson, and Akila Sato-Gaudreau scored for the Cougars while Anthony Ciurro stopped 35 shots for his eighth postseason victory.

Keenan Scardina and Gage Colpron replied for the Storm.

Interestingly, the first four games of the series have been decided by one goal.

Victoria won 3-2 on a double overtime goal by Nathan Looysen in Game 1.  Michal Holub was named the game’s first star after his overtime goal in Game 2 propelled Campbell River to a 4-3 victory.

In Game 3, Riley Welyk made 17 saves to lead the Storm to a 2-1 win and a 2-1 series lead heading into Friday night’s barnburner in Campbell River.

These two teams have met 13 times in the playoffs over the past three seasons and of those 13 games, 12 have been decided by one goal.

The Cougars have outscored Campbell River 32-31 in the process.
