IU Records Five Olympic Trials Cuts at Speedo Sectionals

GENEVA, Ohio – The Indiana University men’s and women’s swimming teams continued competition at the Speedo Sectionals in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday.

In total, the Hoosiers recorded five Olympic Trials cuts on Saturday at the SPIRE Institute Aquatic Center on the first day of the long-course meter meet. In total, Indiana has registered eight Olympic Trials cuts at the Speedo Sectionals this week.

100 Backstroke

In the 100 backstroke, the IU men notched a pair of Olympic Trials cuts in the A Final. Joseph Lane placed second in a Trials cut time of 55.55, while teammate Wilson Beckman placed right behind him in third with an Olympic Trials cut of 56.83. Drew Keenan placed ninth with a time of 59.70.

On the women’s side, Rachel Matsumura led three Hoosiers in the A Final, placing second with a time of 1:04.02. Shelly Drozda finished fifth in 1:04.56, while Ali Rockett placed sixth with a mark of 1:04.61. In the B Final, Katherine Keller placed 15th overall with a time of 1:06.84.

400 Freestyle

Adam Destrampe had a great day for IU, notching an Olympics Trials cut in both the prelims and finals of the 400 freestyle. Destrampe won the A Final with a time of 3:57.80 after posting an OT cut of 3:56.96 in the morning prelims.

Matthew Anderson placed second with a time of 3:58.92, while Andrej Ivanovic took third in 4:02.63. Jack Collins finished fourth in the A Final with a time of 4:03.70, while Joey Snodderly took sixth in 4:04.75. Trey Shackleton placed ninth with a mark of 4:11.91

100 Breast

Sam Apa had a great outing for Indiana in the 100 breaststroke A Final, winning with an Olympic Trials cut of 1:03.44.

Levi Brock finished fifth in a time of 1:04.49, while Stephen Husch placed sixth in 1:05.05. Nikola Andjelic finished eighth in the A Final with a mark of 1:05.18.

On the women’s side, Laura Morley placed second in the A Final with a time of 1:10.41. Mackenzie Atencio finished 11th overall with a mark of 1:14.53.

Morley set her second Bahamian Open LCM record in the last three days on Saturday. Morley now owns both the 100 and 200 breast records. On Thursday, Morley set the mark with a time of 2:36.23, while her time of 1:10.41 in the 100 breast on Saturday is also a record.

Earlier in the morning prelims, Brock registered an Olympic Trials cut time of 1:03.29.

200 Butterfly

In the A Final of the 200 butterfly, the Hoosiers captured the top two spots, with Reagan Cook winning with a time of 2:16.92. Olivia Barker was second with a mark of 2:18.77.

The Speedo Sectionals will conclude on Sunday at the SPIRE Institute Aquatic Center in Geneva, Ohio.
