VICTORIA – A commanding 49-14 victory this past weekend over the Vancouver Rowing Club will provide a lift for the University of Victoria Vikes men’s rugby team as they prepare to host the UBCOB Ravens this Saturday, Apr. 16, in the CDI Premier League Playoffs.
The Vikes utilized the quick ball and strong rucking to put the Rowers on their heels in their previous fixture on Mar. 19. Head coach Doug Tate’s side received scoring from eight different players, including a total of 14 points, four converts and two penalty kicks, from first year Aaron Hersant in his second game with the first team.
“We had good pressure from the start and the Ravens struggled to get any sort of attacking platform established,” said Tate. “We worked hard to distribute the ball, dealt with kickoffs well and capitalized on some poor lineouts on their side.”
The Vikes and Ravens played out to a close 28-22 scoreline in favour of the Vikes on Mar. 5 at Jericho Park. Third year Sawyer Herron had a pair of tries while second year Jonathan Lorimer and eight-man Bhiamie Williamson added the other major scores in the win.
A full 80 minutes of pressure against the Ravens will be crucial as the Vikes enter the final stages of their 2015-16 campaign. Teams will be more inclined to press forward rather than sit back and wait for the counter-attack.
Kick-off time is set for 2:45 p.m. at Wallace Field.
