College Baseball Broncs Travel to Niagara
NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY—The Rider University baseball team will travel to Western New York this weekend to take on the Niagara University Purple Eagles in a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series beginning Saturday with a 12 noon doubleheader.
After a stretch of winning seven of eight games, the Broncs (11-23, 3-6 MAAC) have won just once in their last six games.
Niagara (11-24, 6-6 MAAC) has spent 2016 on the road. The Purple Eagles just played their home opener on Tuesday, splitting a doubleheader with St. Bonaventure.
The Broncs will be sending sophomore Nick Margevicius (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and junior Vincenzo Aiello (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) to the mound for Saturday’s twin bill.
Margevicius has won his last three starts and has 22 strikeouts in his last 16 innings pitched, and will once again pitch game one of the series.
Aiello has allowed just one earned run and two walks in his last 17 innings pitched while striking out 16, and will start the seven-inning game two.
Rider and Niagara did not meet last year, when the Broncs finished in first place in the MAAC and Niagara placed 10th. In 2014 Niagara took two of three games from the Broncs at Rider.
The last time Rider traveled to Niagara, the Broncs won all three games in 2013.
Rider and Niagara have met 49 times since the series began in 1997, with Rider winning 34.
The third game of the series will be Sunday at 12 noon, also at Niagara.
