EDMONTON, AB — Edmonton Oil Kings General Manager Randy Hansch announced today the team has signed 2014 Bantam Draft selection and Sherwood Park native Davis Murray to a standard Western Hockey League player contract.
Murray was selected by the Oil Kings in the 6th round (117th overall) at the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. The centre spent the 2015-16 season with the Sherwood Park Kings Midget AAA squad, where he appeared in 32 games collecting 11 points (7G,4A) and 76 PIM. Murray also played in two games for the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the AJHL scoring one goal.
The 16-year-old Murray returned from injury in the first half helping lead his team to a respectable quarter-final showing at the prestigious Mac’s AAA Midget Hockey Tournament and a second place finish in the North with a 20-10-4 record and earning himself the Player of the Month for the AMHL (Alberta Midget Hockey League) in January where he scored four goals and adding three assists in five games.
“We are very excited to have Davis joining our program,” says Hansch. “His energy and passion for the game will be an asset to our team as we prepare for next season and Davis’ growth and development in our program will be key to our club going forward.”
Prior to being drafted by the Oil Kings, Murray had a productive bantam season with the Sherwood Park Flyers Bantam AAA team recording 31 points (17G,14A) in 32 games.
The next season he stepped up to the AMMHL (Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League) and had over a point per game with 33 points in 28 games for Sherwood Park.
