Borussia Dortmund and Marcel Schmelzer agree contract extension until 2021
Borussia Dortmund have secured the long-term services of another key member of the first-team squad. Defender Marcel Schmelzer today extended his contract at the club until 30 June 2021.
“I am delighted that I will continue being a part of this team that is so strong of character and unique club in the future. Borussia Dortmund is and will remain my sporting home and my family and I have felt at home in the region for many years now,” said Schmelzer.
The 28 year-old has been at Borussia Dortmund for almost 11 years, during which time he won the German championship in 2011, the league and cup double in 2012 and as an attacking left-back, played a key role in helping the club to four further cup finals between 2013 (UEFA Champions League) and 2016 (three DFB Cup finals).
“Marcel Schmelzer is not only one of the best left-backs in Europe, but also a wonderful person with whom BVB enjoys a great deal of mutual admiration and respect,” emphasised Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.
Schmelzer joined Borussia Dortmund as a 17 year-old from 1. FC Magdeburg in 2005 and worked his way up through the under-19 and under-23 sides to become part of the first-team squad in summer 2008. He made the first of his 196 Bundesliga appearances in 16 August 2008.
“Marcel Schmelzer is a player that we have developed in our own youth set-up. He is a real Borusse who fully identifies with our club, is an important member of the side and has taken another stride forward this season,” underlined BVB sporting director Michael Zorc. “We are delighted to be able to plan for the future together with Marcel.”
