Ohio State has placed three on the list
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A trio of Buckeye wrestlers – Micah Jordan, Jake Ryan and Myles Martin – were named today to the Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie Team. It marks the second consecutive year that Ohio State has placed three on the list, following up appearances last year by Kyle Snyder, Bo Jordan and Nathan Tomasello.
Martin (33-6) put an exclamation point on what was an unforgettable true freshman campaign with an 11-9 victory over top-seed Bo Nickal of Penn State in the NCAA finals. The first true freshman national champion in program history and only the 15th in NCAA history, Martin redshirt for the first two months of the season before finally making his varsity debut Jan. 3 at Illinois. He was third at the Big Ten Championships before the storybook run in New York City that saw him become the first No. 11 seed to win a title since 1979.
In the title match, Martin trailed 4-3 in the second period before a wild sequence in which took Nickal down and turned him on his back for four near-fall points to turn a one point deficit into a five point lead.
Jordan fell just one win shy of All-America status at the NCAA Championships but still managed to put together a standout rookie campaign that saw him earn the No. 1 seed at the Big Ten Championships in addition to winning a CKLV title in December. Jordan (27-4) won 20 of his first 21 matches this year at 141 lbs. and rebounded from a quarterfinal loss at Big Tens to pin second-seeded Tommy Thorn of Minnesota in the third-place match.
Ryan, a redshirt freshman from Powell, earned the starting nod at 157 lbs. this year and went on to win 17 matches. He was 9-2 in duals and six wins were via bonus points, including a pin of Wisconsin’s TJ Ruschel in a dual match on Feb. 12. An NCAA qualifier, Ryan nearly upset sixth-seeded Joseph Smith of Oklahoma State in the first round. Including his redshirt season in 2014-15, Ryan has a career record of 36-10.
