Vikes edged UBC once again to claim first in the B Final

The University of Victoria Vikes women’s rowing program opened up their 2015-16 season with a dominating performance at the Western Canadian University Rowing Championship in Burnaby, B.C. on Oct. 17, winning three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals en route to 18 points and the WCURC title. Second years Layla Balooch and Deborah Snell each earned gold in their respective varsity 1x and lightweight 1x events while the pair of fourth year Cate White and second year Lauren Goforth were also golden in the lightweight 2x.
After a successful Head and Tail of the Gorge in late October, the Vikes women’s crews geared up for the Canadian University Rowing Championship on Nov. 1 in Antigonish, N.S. Despite finishing second to three-time defending champions Western, the Vikes medalled in each event, including another gold for Balooch in the women’s single with a time of 7:51.98.
The Vikes hosted their 31st Annual Monster Erg on Jan. 24 inside the CARSA Performance Gym for the first time, moving from its traditional home of McKinnon Gym to the state-of-the-art athletic facility. The event made an impressive debut in the facility with a terrific atmosphere that did not disappoint. Fifth year Madeline Spangehl was the top Vike in the Senior A category, finishing in 7:24.3 for fifth place in the event.
Going into the Brown Cup on Mar. 26 at the Gorge Narrows in Victoria, the Vikes women prepared to keep hold of their title – something the Vikes have done successfully six times in the past seven years. The Vikes women’s varsity crew edged out UBC by 2.75 seconds to pad their historical record in the event to 22-2. A week later at the San Diego Crew Classic, the Vikes edged UBC once again to claim first in the B Final with a time of 7:06.687.
