Season Opener on Saturday marks a decade of derby

Victoria BC: The Eves of Destruction will officially kick-off a decade of roller derby in Victoria with a double header season opener at Archie Browning Arena on Saturday, April 30.

The league’s house teams, the Belles of the Brawl and the Margarita Villains, will square off against Vancouver Island rivals, Nanaimo’s Harbour City Rollers and Campbell River’s Rink Minx, respectively.

Eves’ spokeswoman, Esther Beauregard, says fans can expect hard hits, fast moves and plenty of grit as these athletes take on an impressive roster of players from up Island.

“They’re going to be tough, exciting games,” Beauregard says. “The Belles and Villains have been working hard to prepare for the season opener and we’re expecting solid competition.”

The Belles team features veteran jammers Saragorn and Choka, and blocker powerhouse Nailer Down, while the Margarita Villains lineup includes the formidable Tanya Cheeks, Roadhouse Bruise and The Wife of Wrath.

All games are family friendly (kids under 10 are free!), include a beer garden, and, in a new addition this season, food trucks will cater to hungry fans outside Archie Browning Arena. Hungry Rooster will be selling perogies and sandwiches at Saturday’s game.

Beauregard says the Eves of Destruction has come a long way since a group of skaters met up in 2006 in a parking lot in Victoria to play roller derby. The league now has more than 80 players, officials, & dedicated volunteers, and features five teams: The A-Team, The Belles of the Brawl, The Margarita Villains, The Hard Cores and Rotten Apples Junior Roller Derby, made up of players aged 10 to 18, gender inclusive.

“Roller derby is the fastest growing women’s sport in the world. It’s fast, it’s technical and it’s full contact,” Beauregard says. “Our players are fierce, dedicated athletes.”

To celebrate its tenth year, the Eves of Destruction is offering retro pricing for the season’s bouts: $10 in advance. A sixth home game will give derby fans more action in this anniversary year.

Doors open at 5 pm, seats are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets can be purchased online, or at Logan’s Pub, Hive Hair and The Esquimalt Recreation Centre.
