Buckeyes win seven events at weekend meets

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State track and field team spent Thursday-Saturday at the 107th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Several athletes also competed at the Ashland Alumni Open Saturday in Ashland, Ohio.

Senior Sakiko Minagawa opened competition at the Drake Relays Thursday evening in fine fashion, finishing second overall in the women’s 10,000-meter run – first among collegiate athletes – in a season-best time of 34:52.80.

Ohio State athletes claimed wins in two field events on Friday. Redshirt junior Bill Stanley was victorious in the men’s javelin (67.57 meters/221-8.00), while redshirt senior J.C. Murasky defended his title in the men’s shot put with a throw of 19.96 meters (65-6.00).

The women’s 4×400-meter relay team – senior Aisha Cavin, freshman Karrington Winters, senior Alexis Franklin and senior SoSo Walker – closed the weekend with a bang, using a season-best time of 3:33.32 to claim victory over runner-up Texas. Running in third position entering the final leg, Walker, the OSU anchor, broke away early and never looked back as the Buckeyes posted the No. 19 time in the nation this season and the No. 4 time in Ohio State outdoor record book.

The Buckeye women finished third overall in the final Hy-Vee Cup standings with 25 points, just behind co-champions Texas and Baylor with 26 points.

At Ashland, Ohio State athletes claimed first place in four events: freshman Martha Sam in the women’s 400-meter dash; sophomore Chantel Ray in the women’s 100-meter hurdles; junior Josh Fridley in the men’s high jump; and freshman Coty Cobb in the men’s pole vault (personal-best height of 5.11 meters/16-9.25).
