Sell-out crowd cheers on Eves at season opening double-header

May 1, Victoria: Six hundred screaming fans and 30 seconds left on the clock. That’s what Saturday’s season opener for the Margarita Villains roller derby team came down to at Archie Browning Arena.

The Villains led the game against their opponents, Campbell River’s Rink Minx, at halftime 109-74. But the visiting team came back, pushing ahead of the Villains with under five minutes left on the clock.

With 30 seconds to go, the Villains trailed by three points. Despite a hard fight, Rink Minx jammer Kardiac Arrest cinched four more points, bringing the final score to 157-165 for the visiting team.

The Villains were one of two teams from the Eves of Destruction roller derby league who played in the double-header this weekend. The Belles of the Brawl were defeated 74-281 against Nanaimo’s Harbour City Rollers.

Eves of Destruction spokeswoman Esther Beauregard says despite the home teams’ losses, the league was thrilled with the turnout.

“It was a tremendously successful opener to our season,” Beauregard says. “We had a sell-out crowd of over 600 people and we are so grateful the continued support of our fans, sponsors, and volunteers. Victoria loves roller derby!”

The Villains’ highest scoring jammer was Bannock! At the Disco with 47 points, while Bony Banshee was the Belles’ top jammer with 22 points.

The season opener marks the start of the 10th season for the Eves, whose players started practicing in 2006 in a parking lot. The Eves of Destruction now includes more than 80 players, officials and volunteers, with five teams playing under the EOD name: The A-Team (top 20 players in the league), The Margarita Villains, The Belles of the Brawl, The Hard Cores (rookies and undrafted skaters), and Rotten Apples Junior Roller Derby (gender inclusive, aged 10-18).

The Eves’ next bout is set for May 21 at Archie Browning Arena, featuring the Belles of the Brawl against the Brickhouse Betties, and the Hard Cores versus the Committed. Doors will open at 5pm, with the first game starting at 5:30.
