Lepine has spent the last 12 years as the Director of Excellence forthe Laval Rouge et Or
Today UBC Athletics announced Gilles Lepine will take the helm asthe Senior Athletics Director for the UBC Thunderbirds. Lepine, theformer Director of Excellence for Laval University’s Department ofAthletics, will lead the Thunderbirds Athletics program and buildupon its position as the most successful university sports program inCanada.
“It’s a very exciting opportunity for me and my family,” says Lepine. “TheThunderbirds program is a great program. I was at UBC for the CIS NationalWomen’s Soccer Championship last year and I realized they had great people andhad great staff around.”
“The experience, passion, skill and energy Gilles brings to UBC’s AthleticsDepartment is second to none,” says UBC’s Vice President, Students LouiseCowin. “Gilles is the real deal – he’s been a student athlete, coach, administrator,and builder of championship Varsity programs. The Thunderbirds are apowerhouse in Canada and that powerhouse status is the result of a team effort,which includes alumni, donors, coaches, students and community. Gilles is theright person to lead the Thunderbirds to further excellence.”
Lepine has spent the last 12 years as the Director of Excellence forthe Laval Rouge et Or. In that time Laval saw considerable growth inalumni support, fan interest, and the corresponding ability to recruittop tier student-athletes. The Rouge et Or were perennial nationalchampionship contenders in a multitude of Varsity sports.
“The culture is great. I love what I see in UBC. The attitude, the campus and theathletics program,” adds Lepine. “We have to work in a triangle with the Athleticsstaff, the alumni, and the coaches. So all together we are going to bring somethinggreat to the student-athletes.”
Lepine played and coached volleyball for the Rouge et Or and hasplayed multiple sports competitively over his lifetime. He has alsodedicated countless hours to introducing sports to athletes of allages through the charities and volunteer work.
Gilles Lepine’s will join UBC Athletics in Summer 2016.
