TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Senior Jessica Nathan belted a three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning Thursday evening to account for all her team’s runs as the FAMU Softball team dropped a 12-3 verdict to No. 5 Florida State Thursday evening at JoAnne Graff Field.
FAMU (23-27) had held the highly-regarded Seminoles (43-7) to just four runs in the first three innings, before three errors along with two FSU hits led to an eight-run fourth for the crosstown team to forge a 12-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Lady Rattlers got all three of their hits on the evening in a row as Nachelle Watson and Whitney Farris both reached on singles to set the table for Nathan, whose fourth home run of the season sailed over the left center field wall.
FSU then retired the next three FAMU batters in order to end the game.
Junior pitcher Kenya Pereira (12-14) got the loss for FAMU, after allowing four runs on three hits in three innings of work, with one strikeout and two walks, although she was hampered by two FAMU fielding errors.
Sophomore Veronica Burse came on in the fourth, giving up eight runs on two hits, with four walks and one strikeout. Burse hurt her cause with two wild pitches to go with the three FAMU errors in the fourth.
